PLN 3, Professional Development
-You need to have a plan set in place to further develop technology usage
>Kristen- Classes and seminars were used to educate teachers and student teachers about certain technologies used in the school. But, she was not given any ways on how to integrate it into classroom activities.
-Leadership from the district administrators down has to be consistent because the attitudes from the top affect how everyone else is going to feel about the technology. Administrators need to be willing to block out some time to develop these programs
-Teachers are also willing to take leadership roles to help each other, there needs to be a balance and cohesiveness throughout the school to develop these technology programs.
-Help to develop a professional development model that is school wide and long lasting (They are the ones that are using it!!!!!) Instead of the typical workshops
-Teachers are the ones who are collaborating with each other in an ideal environment.

Explanation of tool: Digital Storyteller is a web 2.0 tool that can be used as a classroom tool by teachers and students. Focusing on student users, it combines both images and text with narration in the student’s own voice and creates a 2-3 minute digital movie. Once a student is logged in, they can upload a photo from Flickr or Picassa site where the student has their own photos. Through a user-friendly step-by-step process, students can transfer their image or images to the storyboard. They can choose to write a story script or comment per picture, and then add narration that records the students’ voice. These storyboards can be saved in a My Folder section. Another useful tool is that the site also offers photos for you, has an easy-to-access help button, and an idea map option. This site offers students a tool to create their very own real-life short story while incorporating creative imagery. It is a medium of expression that can be used individually or for a group product. Stories can easily be uploaded to the Web and shared with the entire class or even a wider audience.
Objective: SWBAT create a work of art and explain how the use of essential elements shaped an idea, mood or feeling found in the work.
How Tool will be used for differentiation: This tool can be used by Jack to provide differentiation on the product for the objective. Jack is a hands on learner, failed reading three times, and struggles at grade level in both areas of reading and writing. Using Digital Storyteller will help support Jack in producing a work of art and provide hands on tool that help him navigate his creative processes. He can choose to make a work of art and photograph it, use photography as his visual art pulling from his own photos or the internet. In addition, this medium itself is art. He could choose to focus on a familiar subject matter like his interest in hunting and fishing therefore pulling from his background knowledge. Jack could explain how the use of elements in his chosen art creation shaped an idea, mood, or feeling through the audio component of Digital Storyteller. This differentiates by giving him a medium other than writing to express his thoughts or talking in front of the class. The use of this tool also aids in supporting Jack to create and produce a final project without relying too heavily on reading or writing, while having hands on application through the process. In addition, Digital Storyteller is incredibly user friendly and does not demand high level of reading.

PREZI.com
Prezi is a great differentiation tool for teachers that is free and easy to use. If you are tired of the static nature of slide shows but, you still want a way to organize and present content try Prezi. I like the way that you can create a spread of information that is laid out on a flat field, and then zoom in, out, and around to reveal information. Moving from one chunk of content to another with a seamless smooth trailing zoom feels like standing behind a high powered video camera, looking at a desktop. When you create a Prezi it is stored online, instead of on you computer, so you can access it from anywhere. The website is gaining popularity, and they are adding even more functionality, so that you can easily embed video, photo, concept maps, and other multimedia resources. One of the best features is that the free version is public, so you can search tons of prezis to find something that you like, and if it is not perfect you can copy it and work right into it. But, if you need a private format you need to purchase the pro version. Prezi can convert your old Power Point files and it can be printed as a .pdf file. When students are absent or need a paper copy of the content it is easy to just print one off.
To differentiate for Sherry, I would design my lecture/presentation with Prezi. I could deliver the assignment for the art project while projecting it on the board. By integrating text, images, and multimedia I think that I could capture and hold her attention. Sherry may comprehend the assignment better this way. Using multiple strategies such as text, images, video and concept maps would give Sherry lots of ways to learn what is expected. In addition this format is a presentation tool, so the teacher is there asking questions and facilitating classroom discussions. In addition, I would only need one computer hooked up to the projector in order for this to work. Since she loves to interact the zooming feature should interest her because it is really different and if that is not enough she could press play to start the video during the prezi. I can set a pace or manually move through the examples and the text so that I can ensure that I don't loose the students who struggle to maintain attention. I would approach the composition of the Prezi in an imaginative way, by treating the chunks of content as destinations along an journey.

Digital Storyteller Meaghan Flerlage
There are so many unique and useful applications that we could choose from for this activity, but the Digital Storyteller stood out the most to me. The Digital Storyteller is a streamlined and very simple site to operate. You are required to register to be able to use the application, which may be detrimental for students’ safety. The user can create a story, type it in a designated box with desired font sizes. Then, students have the choice to record their voice reading, and add videos and pictures to their story. To add ambiance to their story, users can add music to their stories. Also, if a student does not have any pictures, they can choose from stock photos from the program. To organize thoughts for a story, there is tab where users can make outlines or word webs. This program would be great for any student and can be used for group or individual or even class projects.


A Digital Storyteller lesson would be ideal for Philip to complete in the classroom. Philip is described as a “hyperactive” student who loves to “dance around the class”. This student needs kinesthetic classroom stimulation throughout lessons so he does not grow restless. Involving Phillip in a Digital Storybook lesson would keep him active and engaged. He would need to collect pictures or video, record his own voice to a story he has written, and he also has the option to collaborate with other students. Since Philip is a leader, he would be able to organize his class or group in this assignment. Digital Storyteller requires users to write their own stories into the program and Philip is a talented writer. He would excel with this type of lesson. I feel that Digital Storyteller would be a great application for Philip to use in a differentiated lesson.

The tool I choose was called X-timeline. This tool is very fun to use because you can learn about things you didn’t know before. I learned about the history of video games. This website is a time line of events that happened in history. There are many different topics and you can create your own timeline. This website is mostly the colored white and is not too distracting like many other websites. There is a lot to do on the website and so many things to learn. I could see myself working on creating a timeline for the students in my classroom. This would be a great tool to use in my classroom for my students to use and for me to use to show my students who I am and where I have been.

For the student Philip I would use this tool for him. He is a student that has a lot of energy and is very smart. He gets things quickly and he understands how to do tasks very well. If he would use this tool of timelines he could excel with his classmates and with me as his teacher. He could do a timeline of his life for the other students in class. He could also be my special helper for when I teach this to the class. When it comes to content he can help the other students learn how to use this site because he is a nature leader. He could also do this assignment and share it with the class to make the timeline more assessable for the students. For when it comes to process he is a leader and he can learn about this website. He can be in charge of keeping the students on task for when the whole class is learning about the timeline. When it comes to product he can make a timeline for the whole class about his life or about anything he wants as something extra for him to learn.

Incentives: Classroom Gallery in e-room. Highlight Artist of the month
Sherry: The use of technology through providing on-line resources highlighting other artists and how the essential elements in their work helped shape an idea, mood, or feeling. Pair up collaboration with Phillip to promote follow through and on-task behavior.
Jack: Suggesting subject matter that fits with interests and abilities, building on prior knowledge. Use photo essays or fotobabble to deliver explanation of his work.
Provide reading & writing support through the use of e-trade books, visual instruction for technology use (i.e. if he chooses to use photography for visual art), use writing websites and step-by-step interactive online writing guide.
Phillip: Possible collaboration with Sherry to enhance Phillips ability for leadership and drive to be a leader. Suggest use of garage band and posting through classroom website, YouTube, and community contests to provide an outlet for his desire to excel and channel his need for attention or recognition.
